Manipur Polls: Election Commission takes exception to pre-poll violence

The Election Commission has taken strong exception to the recent incidents of pre-poll violence in Manipur. The chief election commissioner informed that the EC has already spoken to the Manipur chief secretary and DGP, following which the matter was also raised with the Union Home secretary.

The Election Commission of India announced the dates for the Manipur Assembly elections in New Delhi along with the dates for Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, and Chhattisgarh today. Elections in Manipur will be held in two phases on February 27th and March 3rd.

Meanwhile, the Chief Electoral Officer of Manipur Rajesh Agarwal in Imphal gave a detailed overview of the polls in the state. He informed that elections in as many as thirty-eight Assembly seats spread across five districts will be held in the first phase while polling for the remaining twenty-two seats in six districts will be held in the second phase on March 3rd.

 In the first phase on February 27th, elections will be held in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts. In the second phase on March 3rd, polling will be held in Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong, Chandel, Thoubal, and Jiribam.

20, 34,755 voters of Manipur are slated to exercise their franchise in the upcoming elections.  Results of the polls will be announced on March 10th along with the four other states that will go to the polls.
