Northeast grapples with Covid-19: Cases rise in Assam, Omicron enters Meghalaya

475 new Coronivirus (Covid-19) cases has been detected in Assam on January 4, which is an increase of 124 new cases as compared to the total 351 cases detected on Monday. The new cases have been detected out of a total of 36,781 tests done in the last 24 hours. A total of 190 cases have been detected in Kamrup (metro) and three new Covid deaths have also been reported.

Meanwhile, Mizoram also reported a total of 443 fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, one Covid related death has been reported in the state. With this, the total active case tally in the state has risen to 2,162. Meanwhile, the Covid positivity rate currently stands at a high of 13.38 percent.

It is to be mentioned that 5 cases of Omicron have been detected in Meghalaya, said sources from the state health department. As per sources, two cases are from East Khasi Hills and another two from Ri-Bhoi while the fifth case is reportedly that of a tourist from Assam. It is yet to be known whether any one of the suspected cases have travel history.

On the other hand, at least 19 health workers at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital have tested positive for COVID-19. Among those who have tested positive for the Corona virus are MBBS students, nursing staff, and pharmacists. Meanwhile, samples of the patients have been sent to Kalyani National Institute for genome sequencing to ascertain if they are infected with the Omicron variant.
