CM Himanta Biswa Sarma urges ULFA-I not to issue boycott call for Republic Day

Taking a step forward the possible talks process between the government and the United Liberation Front of Assam Independent (ULFA-I), Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed the outfit not to declare any bandh or issue any boycott call during the ensuing Republic Day.

Sarma was addressing the media at the Zaloni Club in Duliajan on the second day of the 2-Day Conference of SPs. “I appeal Ulfa Independent Chief Paresh Barua not to declare any bandh or issue any boycott call for the ensuing Republic Day” he urged citing its similar gesture during the last Independence Day.

He also informed that a cordial environment is being built with ULFA-I for a peace process .”Security forces have not launched any major offensive against the outfit during the last eight months. We want to take the peace process ahead and for that, a conducive atmosphere is absolutely the need of the hour,” he said.

While replying to a question on withdrawal of the AFSPA CM Sarma reiterated that it will be done in a rational manner.

Briefing about the two-day-long SPs conference CM Sarma said that a whole of issues like better citizen-friendly policing, war against drugs, organized crime, economic offences like bank fraud, cyber, etc. were deliberated upon.

The use of modern technology for crime investigation became the focal point for discussion in the conference and suggestions regarding its application were sought from central government officials involved in crime control.

It might be mentioned, Union Home Secretary Ajay Kr Bhalla and Director of Intelligence Bureau Arvind Kumar were present during the conference. 

The next SPs conference will be held at the Police Training Center, Dergaon after six months.
