The Government of Sikkim has come forward to preserve the endangered language, culture and traditions of the Bhujel community in Sikkim.
Addressing a New Year and Pughal Parim festival of Bhujel community, state Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said that the Government will take all steps to safeguard the rights of the Bhujels, preserve and protect the culture, traditions, language, which are the parts of Sikkim rich cultural heritage.
He asserted that the Government is examining the proposal to consider Bhujel dialect as one of the State languages and urged the Bhujel community to work for preservation and introduction of their dialect and script into school book form.
There are less than 6000 people of the Bhujel community left in Sikkim.
Among the total population of the community, less than 1000 people can communicate in their own dialect.
Bhujel is one of the communities in Sikkim with rich culture, tradition and language, who have their own script but is at the brink of extinction.
Bhujel is believed to be a clan of the Kirat community and falls under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories in the State of Sikkim.
