Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh paid a visit to Padma Shri, Guru Rewben Mashangva, at his residence in Nagaram, Imphal yesterday.

Taking to Twitter, CM Singh wrote, “It’s always a pleasure meeting the King of Naga Folk music & Padma Shri Awardee Guru Rewben Mashangva. During a visit to his residence today, we discussed about the measures taken up by the State Govt. to preserve the traditional folk music in Manipur.” #ShaknairabaSingaUnaba

Rewben Mashangva, popularly known as Guru Rewben Mashangva, is a Tangkhul Naga folk musician and singer from Manipur’s Ukhrul district. He is known for reviving the musical tradition of the Tangkhul Nagas, and the traditional musical instruments in his songs.
Rewben Mashangva has created many Naga tribal folk songs based on blues and ballad rhythms. He is also known by different names including, ‘Bob Dylan of the Nagas’ and ‘King of Naga folk blues’.

 

He received the National Tribal Award 2011-12, for his contribution to the development of tribal music from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. This year he was honoured with the Padma Shri award, the fourth highest Indian civilian award for his rich contribution to art.
