In a heart-wrenching incident, a wild elephant lost its life after being knocked down by a speeding train in Assam’s Kaliabor. The incident took place at the Jaokata Village here last night.

The impact of the collision was so severe that the jumbo tossed over to a distance of 15 meters, breaking an iron pillar adjacent to the railway track.

It is speculated that the elephant which was part of a big herd had come out in search of fodder.

While the rest of the elephants managed to cross the railway track on time, the last remaining jumbo met with the unfortunate accident.

It may be mentioned here that the forest department had earlier written to the Railway Department requesting trains to ply at slower speeds in elephant corridors.
However, it now seems like the appeals have fallen on deaf ears.

According to the latest report of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), 186 elephants were killed after being hit by trains in India between 2009-10 and 2020-21.

According to data provided by the Ministry’s Project Elephant Division, Assam had the highest number of elephant casualties on railway lines (62), followed by West Bengal (57), and Odisha (27).
