Neeraj Das, the prime accused of the Jorhat Mob lynching has been apprehended by the Assam Police.
Das who goes by the alias ‘Kola Lora’ was absconding since the incident which sent shockwaves in the region.
Till now 13 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the killing of AASU functionary Animesh Bhuyan. The arrested are Bitupon Das, Bikram Das, Subhash Bora, Avinash Bora, Mohan Das, Dev Das, Mahesh Das, Bangali Das, Saru Lora Das, Shubash Das, Neeraj Das and Akoni Das.
Animesh who was a secretary at the Brahmaputra Anchalik Samiti of All Assam Students Union’s Golgahat District, was brutally beaten to death on the streets of Jorhat.
The whole incident was caught on camera.
Animesh and his companions were trying to help a rider who had collapsed on the road along with his vehicle.
The mob misconstruing the whole incident jumped on Animesh and his associates killing him eventually.
The promising youth leader was rushed to the Jorhat Medical College and hospital but was declared brought dead.
Animesh’s associates Pranay Dutta and journalist Mridusmanta Baruah both sustained injuries during the attack which took place at Jorhat’s Nirmal Chariali.
Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has condemned the incident and has assured that the guilty will not be spared.
Education Minister of Assam Dr. Ranoj Pegu reached Animesh’s home today and met with the family members.
He announced that the case will be tried in a fast-track court, and the charge sheet will be submitted within 15 days.
He also announced that a family member of Animesh will be provided a government job.
Meanwhile, Assam is in a state of shock over the gruesome incident of mob lynching.
Members of the civil society, organisations specially the All Assam Students Union of which Animesh was an active member have asked the government for fast and exemplary punishment of all those involved.
