On November 10, four arrivals and departures at Chennai airport were canceled due to heavy rains. In addition, due to warnings issued by the IMD, led to all evening and night flights being canceled yesterday.
Chennai is being battered by heavy rains for days now. With the city grappling with severe waterlogging problems normal life has been thrown out of gear in Tamil Nadu’s capital city.
The death toll from the Chennai rains has now risen to 14 people. 13 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed throughout Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for rescue and relief operations. Of the 13 5 teams have been deployed in Chennai. In addition, three rescue and relief teams were maintained in reserve by the NDRF in case further time was needed.
The reason for the severe rainfall, according to the meteorological service, is due to a low-pressure region over the Bay of Bengal that is expected to consolidate into a depression soon, bringing widespread rainfall to Tamil Nadu, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema until November 11. According to the weather forecast, during November 10 and 11, a wind speed of 45-55 kmph with gusts up to 65 kmph is expected to prevail across the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, and along and off the shores of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh. Following the IMD forecast, the Tamil Nadu government has urged fishermen not to go out into the sea till November 11. In addition, schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Mayiladuthurai are advised to close on November 10 and November 11.
