A day after the Khasi Students Union South West Khasi Hills unit met the member secretary of the Meghalaya state pollution board and urged to not allow any setting up of coke factories in the South West Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday said that there are several formalities to apply for the clearance for setting up a coke factory, adding that a coke factory cannot be set up that easily in the state.
Speaking to the media, Tynsong pointed out that once the companies are granted the Single window Agency or SWA clearance, the concerned companies need to go for the no-objection certificate or NOC from the local village authority and also the district council.
Tynsong further defended the state pollution control board stating that until and unless all the required processes are completed the board will not pass an order for setting up of coke factory.
For some time now many civil society organisations of Meghalaya have been raising concerns about the ill effects of the Coke factories on the people and the people living near it.
There are also complaints that the norms and regulations are not being followed while these coke industries are being set up.
