The body of the third victim, Dr Bikramjit Baruah who went missing after last Wednesday’s tragic boat accident in Nimatighat near Majuli was finally recovered on Tuesday.

A team of SDRF and the local police retrieved the decomposed body of Dr Baruah from Brahmaputra river at south Majuli, where it was found floating.

Locals had found the partially decomposed body floating in the Brahmaputra river at Ahotguri. The identity of the body was confirmed by the district administration and his family members. The body was later sent for post mortem.

Baruah, a resident of Jorhat was posted at the Garmur Civil Hospital in Majuli. He was on board the ill-fated boat that had overturned after a collision with a ferry at Nimatighat.

The number of people who lost their lives in the boat accident went up to three after the doctor’s death. Earlier, body of another victim Indreshwar Bora was recovered from Biswanath district. Another passenger, a college lecturer Parimita Das from Guwahati also died in the mishap.

Meanwhile, the owner of the boat that capsized in the Brahmaputra river was arrested from Dibrugarh on Monday. With this, the number of arrests in connection with the incident has increased to a dozen, including 6 employees of Inland Water Transport (IWT) Department who were arrested for alleged negligence.

At least three persons were killed after a private boat carrying around 92 passengers onboard capsized and sank in Brahmaputra river on September 8, following a collision with a ferry near Nimati Ghat in Jorhat district.
