Several parts of Manipur, including capital Imphal, may witness long hours of power cuts and blackouts as the employees of the State Electricity department have intensified their agitation demanding the implementation of the 7th Pay Panel recommendations.

The members of the Manipur Electricity Employees’ Union or MEEU on Thursday locked down its divisional office located at various parts of the state district, shut the prepaid recharge counter & also a held sit-in demonstrations at various locations.

The Employee Union also staged sit-in demonstration at the complex of MSPDCL located at Keishampat in Imphal. The agitators have threatened to continue the agitations if the govt fails to meet the demands, and may also shutdown power supply.

The agitators said that various MoUs have been signed with the government regarding the implementation of the 7th pay commission; however, the government has failed to convert it into action.

The employees of the Electricity department had earlier given an ultimatum to the government to fulfil its demands by July 31 and had warned of a strike if it was not implemented.

But, due to the pandemic, the strike never took off, but the issue has resurfaced recently as the Covid situation has improved.
