Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a key meet on the Assam Accord with AASU representatives in Guwahati on Tuesday. The meet assumed great significance as this is the first time in 16 years that a Chief Minister-level meet was held on the Assam Accord.
During the meet it was decided that a committee will be constituted comprising of members from the government and the AASU to prepare the roadmap for implementation of the key clauses of the Accord.
The Committee will submit its report within 3 months, informed Assam Accord minister Atul Bora.
Meanwhile, AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya informed that 3 cabinet ministers and 5 AASU members will be the part of the Committee.
Bhattacharya also made it clear that they are still opposed to the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill and they expressed their resentment firmly during the meeting today.
Also referring to Assam’s ongoing border row with four of its neighbouring states, Bhattacharya said that they are taking up the matter with the other students’ bodies of the region under the banner of NESO.
