Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday and invited him to grace the celebration of Meghalaya’s 50th Statehood Day on January 21 next year.

During his meeting with the Prime Minister, CM Sangma also apprised him about the upgradation of the new assembly building in Shillong and sought for Centre’s financial support.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by State Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh.

Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister wrote, “Called on Hon’ble Prime Minister, Sh. @narendramodi ji to specially invite him to #Meghalaya for our state’s 50th Statehood Day on 21st Jan 2022. Had the privilege to apprise him on the upcoming State Assembly building & sought GoI’s support for funding. Thank him for his support”.

The State government has already formed a committee comprising of leaders from both ruling and opposition and various stakeholders for the Statehood Day celebrations.

It may be mentioned that Conrad Sangma had earlier mentioned that it is important that the State celebrates the golden jubilee in a befitting manner.

As part of the North Eastern Region (Re-organisation) Act, 1971, Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya had become full states on 21 January, 1972.

The northeastern was part of Assam but was made an autonomous state through the Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act of 1969.
