The Indian women’s hockey team on Friday broke down during a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he praised them for their performance at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
The Indian women’s hockey team on Friday broke down during a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he praised them for their performance at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
The Indian team lost to Great Britain in a tight contest for the bronze medal on Friday. Despite giving a fierce fight, India lost 3-4 in the bronze medal match. The Rani Rampa-led team has been lauded as they managed to record its best-ever finish at the Games.
After the pulsating match ended, PM Modi called the team and consoled the distraught players. The Prime Minister said that their hard work and sweat have become an inspiration for crores of the country’s daughters.
The Prime Minister told the team to not get disheartened and motivated them stating that the sport which is considered to be the identity of India was reborn on a global platform after decades due to their hard work.
“You all played very well. Though your four-five years of hard work couldn’t be converted to a medal, you hard work and sweat have become an inspiration to crores of daughters of the country. Don’t be disappointed,” Modi told an emotional Indian team.
Team captain Rani Rampal thanked the Prime Minister for his words of appreciation, acknowledgement and motivation.
The Prime Minister also spoke with team coach Sjoerd Marijne and thanked him for his and the team’s hard work.
The women’s team had earlier scripted history by entering the semi-finals of the Games for the first time. With this loss, the Indian women’s team finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics.
