After the win, Indian team head coach Sjoerd Marijne broke down in tears. Praises and love were being showered on coach Sjoerd Marijne. who played a crucial role in the historic performance the Indian team.
“Chak De India Moment for our girls!” a user wrote reacting to a video that went viral on Twitter.
Shah Rukh Khan played Kabir Khan in the 2007 film “Chak De! India” which saw his character lead the Indian women’s hockey team to their win against Australia.
The Indian women’s hockey team scripted history on Monday by advancing to the semi-finals of the Olympics with a stunning 1-0 victory, beating three-time champions Australia.
This is India women’s hockey team’s first semifinal appearance in the Olympics.
They beat Australia, who had been looking for their first medal since securing a podium finish in Sydney in 2000, in the quarter-finals.
In what comes as the greatest moment for women’s hockey in India, Gurjit Kaur scored the lone goal in the match during the first half through a penalty corner in a very tightly contested match.
The Australians threw it their all, but the Indian women refused to buckle even though the Aussies kept piling the pressure with each passing minute.
India will face Argentina in the semi-finals, who defeated Germany 3-0 in the first semi-final.
The victory came a day after the men’s hockey team qualified for the semi-final match.
Many, including politicians and celebrities, also took to social media to celebrate the historic win.
