Days after the ULFA-Independent declared a unilateral truce, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged cadres of the rebel group to come over ground. He said that unilateral ceasefire is a welcome step but talks have to be based on a give and take approach.
Reaching out to ULFA-Independent chief, Chief Minister Sarma urged Paresh Baruah to join the mainstream following wishes of the people.
Sarma also pointed out that while the rebel group has announced ceasefire, it has not signed any formal agreement with the government, and neither had it mentioned about peace talks.
However, the Assam chief minister said that ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah can take the ceasefire issue forward by laying the ground rules for talks.
Significantly, Sarma said that people always yearn for peace and don’t want stray incidents like the one in Tingrai. Sarma’s statement comes in the wake of the recent unilateral truce offered by the ULFA-I.
It may be mentioned that the grenade blast at Tingrai Bazar in Assam’s Tinsukia district last week was carried out upon the instruction of senior ULFA-I leaders.
Two youths – Hiren Gogoi and Ranjit Changmai have been arrested for their involvement in the case
