The number of COVID-19 cases continued to surge in Assam as the state neared the 5,000 mark on Wednesday.

Assam reported the highest single-day rise so far with 4,826 new positive cases. The fresh cases have been detected out of 52,074 tests conducted in the last 24 hours.

The overall positivity rate in the state has gone up to 9.27 percent while the death toll increased to 55.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Summary of 05/5/2021 Today’s Total 4826 Overall Positivity Percentage (4826 cases out of 52074 test done = 9.27%) Kamrup(M) 1383 Death 55 Recovery Rate 87.99.”

Meanwhile, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration today declared the areas with more positive cases as containment zones. Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu said that Wards 28, 16 & 8 have been identified as Covid hotspot.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the order will be effective from 2 PM on Thursday and will remain in place until further orders.

Among the fresh cases, Kamrup Metropolitan district alone today registered 1,383 positive COVID-19 cases.
