In the high-profile Jalukbari seat, Assam Finance Minister and top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Himanta Biswa Sarma is on his way to a thumping victory taking lead by a margin of over 80,000 votes.

After the 17th round of vote counting, the NEDA Convener is now leading by 80,272 votes.

Sarma has amassed 1,05,305 votes and has left his Congress rival Romen Chandra Borthakur behind who is trailing with 25,033 votes.

The Jalukbari constituency went to polls on April 6, 2021.

The ruling BJP is leading in 57 seats while Congress is leading in 28 seats, as per the trends available in the Election Commission website.

Meanwhile, State Congress president Ripun Bora faced a humiliating defeat in Gohpur. Bora was defeated by BJP candidate Utpal Bora by a margin of 14,118 votes.

Assam has a 126-member assembly and a total of 64 seats are needed for a simple majority.
