Meghalaya: NPP-led coalition stakes claim to form Garo Hills Autonomous District Council

The National People’s Party (NPP) on Saturday staked claim to form the next Executive Committee in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.

NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today met Governor Satya Pal Malik and staked claim to form the next council. The Meghalaya Chief Minister was accompanied by the newly elected MDCs.

Taking to Twitter, Sangma said, “Called on the Hon’ble Governor, Sh. @SatyapalMalik6 Ji with the 15 elected MDCs to stake claim to form a new Executive Committee in #GHADC. Together, as the newly constituted Garo Hills Democratic Coalition (GHDC), we will take over GHADC to serve our tribal people of Garo Hills.”

The NPP is looking to form the Executive Council in the GHADC after winning 11 seats. The MDCs have grouped together as – Garo Hills Democratic Coalition (GHDC).

It may be mentioned that the coalition comprises of 11 NPP MDCs, 3 independents and 1 GNC MDC.

NPP MDC from Raksamgre Benedict R Marak will be the new Chief Executive Member (CEM), Rakesh A Sangma, NPP MDC from Babelapara, will be chairperson of GHADC and and Nikman Ch Marak, GNC MDC from Rongrikkimgre, will be the Deputy CEM.

Talking to newspersons, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the GHADC poll results reflect the mood of the people who have voted for a change by voting for new faces. He said 25 of the incumbent MDCs have lost the elections out of the total 29 and that NPP accepts the peoples mandate.

Sangma stressed on the fact that a lot of reformations needs to be done in the GHADC. The Meghalaya Chief Minister also added that there was a clear anti-incumbency against the previous council.
