Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday took his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati.

Sonowal urged all eligible persons of the state to get vaccinated and continue following safety precautions. He said vaccines are safe and it will help curb the pandemic.

“Took my first shot of #COVID19 vaccine at GMCH. Vaccines are safe and will help us defeat this pandemic. I urge all eligible persons of the state to get vaccinated and continue following safety precautions,” Sonowal tweeted.

Meanwhile, Covid testing has been intensified at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airport in Guwahati. The health department has been ensuring mandatory testing for the air passengers arriving in Guwahati from other states.

“Testing is mandatory for the passengers who do not carry a RT-PCR report, conducted within 72 hours,” said an official.

On Wednesday, seven air passengers were tested positive at the LGBI airport.

The state had reported 195 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, of which 104 cases are from Guwahati.

Assam currently has 847 active COVID-19 cases, while 2,15,722 people have recovered from the disease, including 31 on Wednesday, said a bulletin released by NHM Assam.
