NEDA convenor and Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday received massive support during his campaign for BJP candidate for the prestigious Titabor seat, earlier represented by former three-time Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who died on November 23 last year.
A traditional Congress bastion, Titabor, which is in the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, had been represented by Gogoi since 2001 after he was elected in a by-election.
Seeking support for BJP candidate Hemanta Kalita, the senior leader took part in a grand roadshow in this high-profile constituency. The road show received tremendous support from the party workers and local people.
Following that, Sarma addressed a public meeting where he strongly criticised the Congress party for its indifference to the development of the state.
In his speech, Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the various schemes of the government ranging from scooter distribution to meritorious girl students to the flagship ‘Orunodoi’ scheme.
“From Congress’ schemes of distributing yarn, dhotis, lungis, we have shifted our focus to free admission of the students. Now every year, 4 lakh students get free admission to colleges. Instead of dhotis, lungis, we are providing free textbooks up to class 12. Even the under-graduate students get Rs. 1500 by bank transfer to buy textbooks,” the BJP strongman said.
He also mentioned the benefits of the Atal Amrit Abhiyan, Atal Amrit and various pension schemes of the government.
“In this Titabar constituency, 16 thousand women received Rs. 830 per month in their bank accounts,” he added.
The senior BJP leader also promised that ‘Orunodoi scheme’ would cover more beneficiaries with increased amount of Rs. 3,000.
On the other hand, Sarma also took potshots at Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MP and son of former CM Tarun Gogoi for not reaching to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic.
