The Mizoram government is likely to start hectic preparations to deport illegal migrants from Myanmar, after the Union Home Ministry asked Chief Secretaries of four states, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal and Nagaland to sensitise all law enforcement and intelligence agencies for taking prompt steps in identifying the illegal migrants from the country and initiate the deportation processes expeditiously and without delay.

Chief Minister Zoramthanga had earlier announced that his government will provide shelter and other relief to the Myanmar refugees on humanitarian grounds.

Myanmar has witnessed large-scale violence after a military-sponsored coup last month.

In fresh violence that broke out on Friday, seven protesters were killed as the military opened fire on a group of protesters after pro-democracy icon Ang Sang Suu Kyi was charged with corruption.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Serchhip Deputy Commissioner Kumar Abhishek claimed that the administration has a copy of the MHA letter, but the state government is yet to respond to it. He added that at this point of time, there are around 15 to 20 Myanmar refugees in his district.

The violence has triggered a large-scale exodus of Myanmar citizens into Mizoram.

Around 200 Myanmar policemen and their families have also crossed over to the state after they defied orders from the military to shoot protesters.

The Myanmar government has written to the DCs of bordering districts to return the policemen as soon as possible.
