In view of the ensuing Assam assembly elections, the Meghalaya Cabinet has decided to postpone the elections to the 30-member Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) in the State.

The decision was taken yesterday at a cabinet meeting that was chaired by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma.

The polling date has been postponed from April 9 to April 12 due to the third phase of the assembly elections, which is slated to be held on April 6 in Lower Assam in order to ensure smooth execution of the GHADC elections.

Speaking to media persons, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said since Lower Assam and Garo Hills region share close proximity and there are issues of logistics, security and manpower,  therefore the Cabinet has decided to postpone the GHADC election.

The counting of votes for GHADC polls has also been postponed to April 15 to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.
