With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown being imposed all over the country, the film industry has been severely hit this year.
The impact of lockdown on the entertainment industry in Assam is still being evaluated, however, the most badly affected are the Cinema hall owners with the suspension of shows in theatres across the state.
Staring at a grim future, hall owners of major single-screen cinema houses have decided to stop functioning and no longer screen movies.
According to reports, owners of four theatres in Guwahati – Vandana, Apsara, Meghdoot and Urvashi have decided to shut down the cinema halls owing to huge financial burden, while a cinema hall in Vijaynagar has also decided to close their doors. The hall owners informed that although being shut for the last 10 months, they have been issued large electrical bills, which resulted in massive loss to the business.
It may be mentioned that cinema halls have been shut since the month of March due to the outbreak.
In October, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued guidelines to reopen theatres with 50 percent capacity. But hall owners of the state, fearing losses decided not to reopen with less audience.
