The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday ordered the newly formed Bodoland Territorial Council in Assam to prove their majority in the recently held BTC election. As per the court direction, the floor test is to be conducted before December 26.

A bench of Gauhati High Court have asked both United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) to prove majority in the council through composite floor test.

The court order came after Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF moved the high court complaining of violation of several constitutional provisions while appointing the new CEM and other members of the BTC.

The petitioner complained that despite being the single largest party, BPF was not given the opportunity to prove its majority on the floor of the house.

After hearing both sides today, the court ordered a composite floor test to elect the new CEM.

The court has also stayed the appointment of 6 nominated members of the council and asked the council to maintain status quo as far as taking any policy decision is concerned.
