Fate of elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council in Meghalaya will be decided during the next meeting of the State cabinet on October 13.
The five-year tenure of the GHADC will come to an end this month. Considering the COVID-19 situation, it is either expected to extend the tenure of the Council or put it under the administrative rule until elections are held. However, few political parties are demanding that the elections should be held.
Speaking on the matter, Meghalaya District Council Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that there are only two options for the Government, either extend the tenure or bring the GHADC under the administrative rule.
On the allegations of corruption at the GHADC leveled by the BJP, the DCA Minister said that District Councils are an autonomous body which does not necessarily fall under the direct supervision of the State Government and whatever funds they receive from Centre are being audited and supervised.
On BJP being adamant for a CBI probe, Rymbui said that the State Govt will take a decision after the report of the audit.
