India’s longest passenger ropeway over the Brahmaputra river was formally inaugurated in Guwahati on Monday.
In a major boost to tourism, the 1.8 km long ropeway was inaugurated across the mighty Brahmaputra today by Assam Finanace Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with Guwahati Development Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya.
The ropeway connects Guwahati and North Guwahati and will cover a total length of nearly 2 km within approximately 8-9 minutes. The ropeway’s ticket fare for one way will be Rs. 60, while, Rs.100 will be charged for a to and fro commute. The project has been completed at a cost of Rs 56 crore.
The lower terminal of the ropeway is at Kachari Ghat in Panbazar, while the upper terminal is at Rajadwar village behind the Dol Govinda Temple in North Guwahati.
Overlooking the beautiful Brahmaputra river, the 1.8 km long ropeway will facilitate passengers to cross the river reducing the travel time by an impressive difference. The 1.8 km long ropeway has two cabins, each with a capacity of 32 passengers.
Due to COVID-19 health guidelines, only 15 passengers will be carried one time as of now which is half of the capacity.
As per reports, close to 60 CCTV cameras have been installed at the site for monitoring the ropeway service every single minute. The ropeway service would provide opportunities to see the landscapes of Guwahati city, mighty Brahmaputra and the Umananda Temple on Peacock island among others.
It may be mentioned that the ambitious project was initiated in 2006 by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authorities as part of beautifying the Brahmaputra riverfront and a major portion of work was finally completed in 2019.
The inauguration of the river ropeway has brought a ray of hope to the people of North Guwahati. The rope way will be vital during floods when the Brahmaputra flows above the danger level. It is also expected to boost the tourism sector in the state.
