In a historic announcement, one that is likely to have a monumental impact in bettering educational facilities in tea gardens in Assam, the education department will construct 119 high schools in as many tea estates.

Construction work of 119 high schools will begin on Oct 2 at a whopping budget of Rs 142.5 crore – Rs 1.19 crore earmarked for each school, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced in Guwahati.

“Such a massive move to built high schools in ta gardens in the State has never been taken up in the State. It’s the first mega project to better infrastructure in education sector in tea garden areas that is being taken since independence,” Sarma said.

The PWD, he further informed, has already floated tenders for the project and that construction work of all the 119 schools will begin on Gandhi Jayanti this year.

“We will begin construction work on Gandhi Jayanti this year and the buildings will be ready in 6-7 months. We are hopeful of beginning classes in these facilities from the next academic session in April next year,” Sarma added.
