Assam will soon get four sophisticated Ro-Pax vessels that will replace the earlier Ro-Ro vessels to boost water transport facility. Among the four state-of-the-art vessels, two will be placed in Majuli, the river island in Brahmaputra.
“We are concerned about the non functioning of Ro-Ro vessels placed in Majuli operated by IWAI, GOI. We are receiving 4 (four) new state of the art ‘Ro-Pax’ vessels shortly out of which two would be placed in Majuli,” Assam transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said in a tweet.
These vessels have low draft, good maneuverability in comparison to the earlier Ro-Ro vessels which had less maneuverability due to bigger size and high draft for which it faced difficulty in plying over the Brahmaputra.
According to reports, while two vessels will be placed in Majuli, one each will be placed in Guwahati and Dhubri.
The vessels will operate in the national waterways No. 2 stretching from Dhubri to Sadiya. The vessels are already en route from Kolkata to Guwahati via Bangladesh and have reached Hemnagar, West Bengal.
