Amid surge in coronavirus cases in Guwahati, the Assam health department has decided to conduct 50,000 COVID-19 tests in the city from next week.

Addressing a press meet on Saturday, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the situation in Guwahati was a matter of ‘grave concern’ as 25 people in the city had tested positive for the disease without having any recent travel history.

The sample tests will be carried out at 12 government healthcare facilities including Gauhati Medical College and Hospital from June 15, said health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Meanwhile, the state government will decide on imposing further lockdown in Guwahati following the results of 50,000 COVID-19 tests to be conducted in the city.

“If a large number of people is found COVID-19 positive, then lockdown may be imposed in Guwahati. I request the citizens of Guwahati to be prepared for another lockdown if the number increases after 50 thousand tests,” Sarma said.

While briefing mediapersons on the coronavirus situation in the State, Sarma stated that Assam has achieved the milestone in COVID-19 tests. So far, more than 2 lakh tests have been conducted in the State.

According to official data, Guwahati has registered 172 COVID-19 positive cases so far.
