In a record breaking victory, the United Democratic Party (UDP) not only managed to retain the Shella assembly seat but also broke the trend of small winning margin by 6,221 votes.

UDP’s Balajied Synrem defeated his nearest rival and independent candidate Grace Mary Kharpuri by 6,221 votes. Synrem got 12,002 votes while Kharpuri his nearest rival got 5,781 votes.

The starting round one of the counting which begin at 8 am, UDP Candidate Balajied Synrem was clearly in the lead and it further increased in the other five rounds.

Independent Candidate Grace Kharpuri did show some fight but it got over soon as the gap widened. Other parties like the Congress, BJP, PDF and one independent were well below their expectations.

Talking to newsmen, Synrem said that the win reflects the love and trust of the people and he will give his best shot to take the legacy of his late father Dr. Donkupar Roy ahead.

It may be mentioned that during the 2018 Assembly general elections, late Dr. Donkupar Roy had won by a narrow margin of 370 votes against his nearest rival Leston Wanswett of the People’s Democratic Front or PDF.
