The Khasi Students’ Union has come down heavily on both the ruling and opposition parties in Meghalaya for failing to come up with a comprehensive mechanism to counter influx of illegal immigrants.

KSU president Lambok Marngnar said that a series of agitations were held in the past by various pressure groups to demand the implementation of the Inner Line Permit or ILP in the state.

Many rounds of discussion and dialogues were held with the successive government but the problem still persists.

The then state government had denied the implementation of the ILP but had worked upon a comprehensive mechanism which includes setting up of entry and exit point and the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act, Lambok said after the agitation in 2013.

The organisation demanding the ILP came up with a suggestion to come up with legislation to regulate the influx in the state of Meghalaya that is to construct entry and exit point and also the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act 2016.

It may be mentioned that the construction work for the entry and exit point is currently going on at Umling, Ri-Bhoi district, Guwahati-Shillong road and the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act was to be introduced in the recently concluded autumn session of the state Assembly, but it was not tabled for discussion.
