Eminent lawyer and former Union Law Minister Ram Jethmalani passed away at his residence in Delhi today. He was 95.
A Rashtriya Janata Dal MP, Jethmalani had served as the Union Law Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Besides, he had also served as the chairman of the Bar Council of India.
Known as a doyen in legal fraternity, he practiced criminal law for six decades and had also been part of many Constitutionally important cases. He had defended the accused in several high profile cases even facing criticism.
Jethmalani was born in Shikarpur in Sindh now in Pakistan. His family moved to India at the time of partition. During the schooldays, Jethmalani got a double promotion and completed matriculation at the age of 13.
Jethmalani secured an LLB degree from Bombay University when he was 17. He started practicing at the age of 18. He also received LL.M. from the same University.
Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind expresses his condolences at the demise of the former union minister. He said that the nation has lost a distinguished jurist.
PM Modi also extended his deep condolences to Jethmalani’s family. He said that Jethamalani’s pioneering work will continue to live on.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expresses his deep condolence at the sudden demise of the veteran lawyer. Taking to twitter he said and I quote, “Ram Jethmalani’s passing away is an irreparable loss to the entire legal community.”
