As many as 200 new Foreigners’ Tribunals have been made operational across Assam on Monday.
The new tribunals are spread across 6 districts in the State in addition to the 100 tribunals already existing taking the present tally to 300. This was informed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
People left out of the NRC can now start filing pleas in the 200 new Foreigners Tribunals, informed the Home Ministry. The Home Ministry further allayed fears over detentions of people left out of the final NRC.
It said that the excluded people will not be detained under any circumstances till they exhaust all remedies available under law. These people will continue to enjoy their rights as earlier, like any other Indian citizen, the MHA added.
It may be mentioned that the over 19 lakh people left put of the final NRC are required to appeal to the Foreigners’ Tribunals. As such the additional tribunals have been made operational so as to ease the inconvenience.
