Union Home Minister Amit Shah took up the issue of illegal migration to Northeast with his Bangladesh counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan who is on a visit to India.

Shah raised concerns over the illegal movement of people across the border and called for a solution to it at the earliest. Both the Home Ministers re-affirmed the need to curb the menace of trans-border crimes and agreed to the need for greater co-operation to achieve the aim of a secure border.

They also reviewed the pending issues related to security and infrastructure along the border and agreed to take steps to resolve the matters expeditiously.

Amit Shah also assured his Bangladesh counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan of India’s support for safe and speedy repatriation of the displaced Myanmar citizens sheltered in Bangladesh, for whom India has provided humanitarian assistance in four tranches since September 2017.

The leaders also deliberated on enhancing cooperation in simplifying people-to-people contact and travel for business, health and tourism. Notably, this was Amit Shah’s first international outreach after assuming charge as Home Minister two months ago.

Amit Shah also took to the twitter after the meeting and said, “Had an extensive discussion on bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh.”

Shah also appreciated Bangladesh’s policy of not allowing use of its territory by extremists and insurgents for perpetrating violence in India. The meeting between Amit Shah and Asaduzzaman Khan was the 7th round of Home-Minister level talks between India and Bangladesh.
