It is clear now that the Centre is pushing hard to get the NRC deadline extended so that the process is implemented properly without any faults.

Confirming this, Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai said a petition signed by 25 lakh applicants submitted to the Centre demanded extension of the deadline to correct anomalies. As such the Centre has moved the Supreme Court on the issue.

The Union Minister of State added that the demand for extension was made to ensure that bogus names can be chucked out and left out genuine names find pace in the final list.

He added that the government’s intention is to ensure that no genuine citizen is left out of the NRC.

Rai was responding to a query on the NRC issue raised by AGP MP Birendra Prasad Baishya.

Meanwhile speaking in Rajya Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that the government will identify illegal immigrants staying in any part of the country and deport them thus hinting at an NRC-like exercise in the entire nation.

Shah was replying to a supplementary query by Samajwadi Party member Javed Ali Khan on whether the National Register of Citizens or NRC will be implemented in other states as well.

Currently, the NRC is being updated under the strict monitoring of the Supreme Court in Assam and July 31 has been set as a deadline for final publication of the registered data.

Shah reiterated that the NRC is a part of the Assam Accord and was also in the BJP’s election manifesto based on which the government came to power. He added that the government will identify illegal immigrants living on every inch of the country’s soil and will deport them.
