The Ministry of Home Affairs has reconstituted the High Level Committee to look into the implementation of the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

The High Level Committee will be headed by Justice (Retired) Biplab Kumar Sarma. Other members of the 13-member committee include Ramesh Borpatragohain, Advocate General of Assam, Niloy dutta, Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh, Subhash Das, Former Bureaucrat, Pallab Bhattacharya, Former Special DGP of Assam, Sumanta Chaliha, Author, Jaikanta Sharma, Professor & Columnist , Wasbir Hussain, Editor-in-chief Northeast Live,  a former member of the National Security Advisory Board, Sammujjal Bhattacharya, AASU Chief Advisor, Dipanka Kumar Nath, AASU President, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, AASU General Secretary.

The committee will examine the effectiveness of actions taken since 1985 to implement clause six of the Assam Accord and hold discussions with various stakeholders including social organisations, legal and constitutional experts.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the setting up of the high level committee in its meeting held in January this year.

Clause six of the Assam Accord talks about appropriate constitutional, administrative and legislative safeguards to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.
