Who is Nidhi Tewari Appointed Private Secretary to PM Modi?

Nidhi Tewari, a 2014-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) has been appointed the private secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She is currently serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. Her appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on a co-terminus basis.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Ms Nidhi Tewari, IFS (2014), currently serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, in Level 12 of the pay matrix with immediate effect, on a co-terminus basis or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” read the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel on March 29.

Notably, she could be one of the youngest officers in the post.

Who is Nidhi Tewari?

Nidhi Tewari hails from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, which has been PM Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency since 2014.

She joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) as part of the 2014 batch after securing the 96th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

Before entering the civil services, she served as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi while preparing for the UPSC exams.

In 2022, she joined the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as an Under Secretary and has been serving as Deputy Secretary since January 2023.

At the PMO, she worked in the ‘Foreign and Security’ division, overseeing areas such as foreign affairs, security, and atomic energy.

Her expertise in international relations was key to her role, and she reported directly to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Additionally, Nidhi Tewari has worked in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division at the Ministry of External Affairs.

Her deep knowledge of international relations proved invaluable, especially during India’s presidency of the G20, where she played a significant role in shaping key policies and decisions.

The Prime Minister previously had Vivek Kumar and Hardik Satishchandra Shah as his private secretaries.
