Assam had a Muslim population of approximately 1.07 crore, making up 34.22% of the total 3.12 crore residents.

In a significant political statement ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that the Muslim community in the state now understands the BJP’s development agenda. Referring to the recent Samaguri by-poll results, he asserted that the Muslim population recognises the BJP’s commitment to the welfare of society.

Addressing the media, Sarma stated, “The Muslim community has realised that the BJP supports those who seek progress and development.” He reiterated that his government is not against any religious group but is firm in its stance against individuals involved in illegal activities. “We are only taking action against fake journalists, drug smugglers, land grabbers, and those involved in activities like love jihad,” he added.

According to the 2011 Census, Assam had a Muslim population of approximately 1.07 crore, making up 34.22% of the total 3.12 crore residents. After Jammu and Kashmir became a Union Territory, Assam became the state with the highest Muslim population percentage in the country.

Sarma’s remarks come at a time when political parties are gearing up for the 2026 Assembly elections, with the BJP aiming to strengthen its support base across all communities in the state.
