Manipur: Police Arrest 3 Insurgents, Recover Huge Cache of Arms and Explosives in Search Operations

In a major crackdown on insurgent activities, Manipur Police arrested three active cadres of different banned outfits in various parts of the state on March 28. The arrests were part of intensified search operations aimed at curbing militant activities in the conflict-ridden region.

The three insurgents were nabbed in separate operations, with one cadre of the KCP (Politburo Standing Committee), identified as Rohit Singh alias Pukhrambam Kakpa, arrested from Khundrakpam Awang Leikai under Heingang Police Station, Imphal East District. Another active cadre of the PREPAK-Progressive group, Pukhrambam Samchand Meetei alias Potshemba, originally from Nathan Village, Churachandpur, and currently residing in Hiyangthang, Imphal West, was apprehended near Manipur Diesel, Mantripukhri, under Heingang Police Station, Imphal East. A third insurgent, Hawaibam Ibungo alias Mangi of Sekmaijin Mayai Leikai, Kakching District, was arrested from Sekmaijin Mayai Leikai under Hiyanglam Police Station, Kakching District. He was actively involved in recruiting new members and extorting money from the public in Kakching District.

Security forces also conducted search operations and area domination exercises in various vulnerable hill and valley districts, leading to the seizure of a massive cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives. From Kamu Village, Mapithel Ridge in Imphal East District, the police recovered a cylindrical-shaped IED (11 kg), two Pumpi Improvised Explosive Firing Devices, four large and three small Pumpi Improvised Mortar Bombs, a Digital Day Sight/Mor Sight with a telescopic bubble, a Telescopic Day Sight, 32 fired 12 Bore cases, one live 12 Bore round, and one 12 Bore ammunition belt, along with trip flare mechanisms and cortex wire. In the Wabagai Buffalo Farm area of Kakching District, the police seized a single-barrel gun, six live rounds of 5.56 INSAS, 11 live rounds of 7.62 AK, three Chinese grenades, a Molotov cocktail, one HE 36 Hand Grenade, a detonator, and two containers with five detonators. Other recovered items included live rounds of 12 Bore, a handset, empty cartridge cases, tear smoke shells, a torchlight, a BP vest cover, hunting boots, and polythene bags.

Further recoveries from Naranseina and Sunusiphai villages in Bishnupur District included an Excalibur Rifle with two empty magazines, a Carbine Machine Gun with one empty magazine, two .303 Sniper Rifles, a 7.65 mm Pistol with an empty magazine, a Russian-made pistol with an empty magazine, two INSAS LMG empty magazines, live rounds of various calibers, and grenades. Additionally, security forces seized 15 packets of Power Gel explosive, two IEDs weighing approximately 3.42 kg, 17 BP helmets, 12 tear gas shells, 26 BP plates, 10 BP jackets, a KENWOOD wireless set with chargers, BAOFENG WT sets, a tactical magazine pouch, and other tactical equipment.

Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies, while further investigations are underway to identify links between the arrested insurgents and other underground outfits operating in Manipur.
