SAMAHAR Natya Gosthee to Stage ‘Nyay’ on World Theatre Day in Guwahati

SAMAHAR Natya Gosthee; SAMAHAR President Lalit Chandra Sarma emphasised the importance of theatre as a medium for social change.
Renowned theatre group SAMAHAR Natya Gosthee will stage its play Nyay on 27th March 2025 to mark World Theatre Day. Written and directed by eminent theatre personality Dr Sitanath Lahkar, the play will be performed at the Sri Sri Madhavadeva International Auditorium, Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, at 6:45 PM.
Eminent scholar and former Gauhati University Professor (Dr) Abani Kumar Bhagawati will grace the occasion as Chief Guest. He will inaugurate the play and speak on the significance of World Theatre Day, which was first observed in Paris in 1961.
Commenting on the occasion, SAMAHAR President Lalit Chandra Sarma emphasised the importance of theatre as a medium for social change. “World Theatre Day is significant for all theatre practitioners. Considering the present social scenario in our state and country, we decided to celebrate it with the staging of Nyay,” he said.
The play Nyay deals with the pressing issues of lynching and rape, focusing on a rape victim’s struggle for justice and the stigma she faces. It portrays the challenges and resilience of survivors in their fight for dignity.
SAMAHAR Natya Gosthee, a leading amateur drama group from Assam, has been an integral part of the theatre scene for over 41 years. With more than 500 successful productions across Assam, Tripura, West Bengal, Goa, and Delhi, the group continues to make significant contributions to theatre through stage, street, radio, and television performances.
