Assam CM Discusses ST Status and Key Demands of Matak Community in Dibrugarh

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma held a crucial meeting with representatives of Sodou Axom Matak Sanmilan, All Assam Matak Students’ Union, Matak Mahila Parishad, and Matak Yuva-Chatra Sanmilan at the CM Secretariat in Dibrugarh on Saturday.

The meeting addressed several significant demands of the Matak community, with a primary focus on granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

During the discussions, the representatives urged the state government to expedite the process of granting ST status to the Matak community. Other key demands included the construction of Matak Bhawan in Guwahati, an increase in reservation for women in the Matak Autonomous Council, and issuing Permanent Resident Certificates (PRC) to Matak residents in Arunachal Pradesh.

Infrastructure development was also a major concern, with demands for the construction of flyovers at Panitola, Makum, and Chabua, as well as the upgradation of Sarbananda Singha Stadium in Tinsukia. The community also sought the establishment of small-scale cold storage units to support farmers.

Additionally, cultural preservation remained a priority, with calls for the promotion of Gostolor Bihu and the protection of Matak royal heritage. The delegation also requested land allocation in Tinsukia for the central office of the All Assam Matak Students’ Union and the restoration of Matak heritage properties.
