Assam HS First Year Exams Cancelled Amid Massive Question Paper Leak; 15 Private Schools Lose Affiliation

The board will announce further action following a meeting on March 24.

The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has cancelled all remaining subjects of the ongoing Higher Secondary (HS) First Year Examination 2025, originally scheduled from March 24 to March 29, following reports of a question paper leak and serious breaches of examination protocols.

In an official order issued on Saturday, Ranjan Kumar Das, Controller of Examinations (in-charge) of ASSEB, stated that the board had earlier postponed the HS First Year Mathematics exam, after receiving reports of an alleged paper leak. However, further investigations revealed that several institutions had opened the sealed question paper packets on March 20, despite the exam being scheduled for the second session of March 21.

“Since question paper packets were under the custody of respective institutions, the possibility of leaks in other subjects cannot be ruled out. Therefore, we have decided to cancel the remaining exams scheduled from March 24 to March 29, 2025,” the order stated. The board will announce further action following a meeting on March 24.

The ASSEB has taken strict action against institutions involved in the breach. The board has suspended the affiliation of 15 private schools across 10 districts for violating examination protocols and breaking the seal of the Class 11 Mathematics question paper before the scheduled time, leading to the leak.

Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu confirmed that the state government will also take action against three provincialised (government-aided) schools for similar violations. “We have lodged FIRs against the responsible institutions, and these schools are now barred from admitting Class XI students for the academic session 2025–26,” he stated.
