The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to extend the July 31 deadline for the publication of final Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The top court also asked Assam chief secretary Alok Kumar, state NRC co-ordinator Prateek Hajela and Election Commission to hold deliberations within 7 days to decide how to conduct the citizen register verification hearings.

The move came in view of the impending Lok Sabha elections as the court considered that both the elections and the NRC exercise should not be affected.

NRC co-ordinator Prateek Hajela informed the apex court that 36.2 lakh claims for inclusion of names in final NRC while over 2 lakh objections were also filed. Hajela further informed the court that notices have been issued to claimants 15 days before hearing of claims, that will start on February 15.
