Over 7000 people gathered in Itanagar for the hunger strike while demanding for the repeal of the Act and calling it discriminatory and unconstitutional

The Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF) on Monday staged a protest in state capital Itanagar while opposing the implementation of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act 1978 (APFRA).

People from the state’s Christian community sat down for an eight-hour-long hunger strike in protest against the Act.

As per the ACF, over 7000 people gathered in Itanagar for the hunger strike while demanding for the repeal of the Act and calling it discriminatory and unconstitutional.

They claimed that APFRA violates the freedom of accepting faith and religious belief.

“We oppose this Act. Anti-conversion law is enforced in 11 states. This is only against Christianity,” ACF alleged.

The enforcement of APFRA would create hatred among people, they stated.

The protest came in amid the Arunachal Pradesh government’s decision to implement the law which had remained dormant for decades, following a directive from the Gauhati High Court in September last year.

Noteworthy is that the APFRA was originally introduced to prevent cases of forced religious conversions, while prescribing strict penalties including prison upto two years and a fine of Rs 10,000 for violations.
