Assam Govt Announces Rs 10 Lakh Ex Gratia for Victims of Umrangso Mine Tragedy

The next of kin of the 5 miners still trapped will also receive Rs 10 lakh each, whether they are found alive or dead.
The Assam Cabinet today announced key decisions in the wake of the tragic coal mine tragedy in Umrangso, Dima Hasao district, where 4 bodies have been recovered, and 5 miners are still trapped inside the rat-hole mine.
The Government has announced Rs 10 lakh as ex gratia to the next of kin of the 4 deceased miners in the coal mine tragedy.
Additionally, the next of kin of the 5 miners still trapped will also receive Rs 10 lakh each, whether they are found alive or dead.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also outlined further actions, including a Judicial Enquiry Commission, a Special Investigation Team (SIT), and a blanket ban on rat hole mining to ensure safety and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the formation of a Judicial Enquiry Commission, headed by Justice Anima Hazarika, former Judge of Gauhati High Court. The commission will thoroughly investigate the incident and determine accountability for the tragedy.
To prevent such incidents in the future, a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) will be created to enforce a blanket ban on rat-hole mining in the state of Assam.
Additionally, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be constituted to investigate the coal mine tragedy based on the FIR already registered. The SIT’s activities will be monitored by Justice Anima Hazarika.
Furthermore, the Mines and Minerals Department has been directed to collaborate with central agencies to close all existing rat hole mines in Assam.
The incident happened on January 6 in a flooded rat-hole coal mine in Kalamati, Umrangso.
Earlier, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the rat-hole mine was declared abandoned 12 years ago by the Assam Mineral Development Corporation.
