The state is actively working to showcase its potential ahead of the Advantage Assam 2.0 Global Investment Summit
Assam, which faced significant developmental challenges due to insurgency and violence until the 1980s, is now positioning itself as a hub for industrial growth. The state is actively working to showcase its potential ahead of the Advantage Assam 2.0 Global Investment Summit to be held on February 25 in Guwahati.
For the first time, Assam Ministers are visiting key international locations like Singapore, Dubai, London, and Thailand to attract global investors in sectors such as infrastructure, electronics, aerospace, renewable energy, tourism, and more.
Minister of Industries & Commerce, Bimal Borah is in Dubai, where he held a mega roadshow on January 15.
At the event, Minister Borah emphasized Assam’s growing infrastructure, including projects like the Jogighopa Multimodal Logistics Park, which will make the state a vital logistics hub. The Minister also highlighted Assam’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage as key attractions for tourism.
Minister Borah also met with business leaders, including the Transworld Group, a multinational shipping conglomerate. Such partnerships are expected to boost Assam’s exports by improving logistics services especially because of the state’s resource-rich economy, which includes tea, oil, and natural gas.
The Minister is also scheduled for a roadshow in London on January 17, promoting Assam’s business-friendly environment and focusing on sectors like renewable energy and tourism.
On January 15, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Greentech, a leader in solar power systems, discussing projects focused on renewable energy and carbon-free solutions as part of Assam’s commitment to sustainable growth.
State IT and Science and Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta met with Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Chin Tong Liew, in Kuala Lumpur on January 14. The discussions focused on attracting semiconductor investments to Assam, aiming to integrate the state into the global high-tech manufacturing chain.
Minister Mahanta also hosted a roadshow in Malaysia, drawing participation from over 150 businesses, and highlighted the state’s growing investment opportunities.
Additionally, Singapore has been announced as the first partner country for the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit in February 2025, further strengthening Assam’s position on the global investment map.
This global tour reflects Assam’s ambitious plans to accelerate economic growth and attract key investments that will reshape the state’s industrial landscape.
Terrorism in Assam, primarily driven by insurgent groups like the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), has plagued the state for several decades, peaking during the 1980s and 1990s.
ULFA, formed in 1979, was one of the most prominent groups advocating for Assam’s secession from India, leading to years of violence, including bombings, kidnappings, and clashes with security forces.
However, over time, the situation improved with peace talks, surrender of militant groups, and concerted efforts by the government to restore normalcy. The signing of peace accords, such as the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) agreement in 2003 and other subsequent peace initiatives, along with economic initiatives like the “Advantage Assam” investment summits, helped steer the state towards greater development and stability.
