A 10-month-old child has tested positive to the virus and is admitted in the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh.
Amid a nationwide alert over the emergence of HMPV cases, the first case of HMPV from Assam was detected in Dibrugarh. A 10-month-old child has tested positive to the virus and is admitted in the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh.
As per inputs, the case was detected during routine HMPV screening at the Regional VRDL Laboratory ICMR-RMRC. Since 2014, the lab has reported over 100 cases of HMPV from Dibrugarh.
Meanwhile, Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal has clarified that the Human Meta-neumo-virus is not a new virus.
He assured that the state government is fully prepared to implement necessary measures in line with the advisories issued by the Centre.
At least nine cases of HMPV infection have been reported from India since January 7. Initially, HMPV cases were reported in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Gujarat confirmed another case on Friday, followed by two additional cases reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra. On Wednesday, another HMPV case was confirmed in Mumbai. One more case was reported from Ahmedabad on Thursday.
HMPV infections are not new in India, with several cases reported in December 2024. However, former WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said that tallying HMPV cases is unnecessary, as the virus is already recognised and manageable.
