Mislead by Google Maps, Assam Police Lands In Nagaland, Gets Thrashed by Locals

A 16-member team of the Assam Police accidentally entered Nagaland’s Mokokchung district while conducting a raid on Tuesday night. Misguided by Google Maps, the officers were mistaken for miscreants by locals, attacked, and held captive overnight.
The Jorhat District Police team was pursuing a criminal in what was believed to be a tea garden area within Assam. However, the location, marked incorrectly on GPS, was in Nagaland. Compounding the misunderstanding, only three of the officers were in uniform, while the rest were in civilian clothing, raising suspicion among the locals.
“The locals thought the armed group were miscreants and detained them,” said a senior Assam Police official. One officer sustained injuries during the altercation.
Upon learning of the incident, Jorhat Police contacted the Mokokchung Superintendent of Police, who sent a rescue team to the location. Five officers, including the injured personnel, were released after the locals realised the group’s identity. However, 11 officers were held captive overnight before being freed the following morning.
The officers have since returned to Jorhat.
