Assam: Elephant Population Grows To 5,828 in 2024

In some positive news, the Assam government’s wildlife conservation efforts have finally shown results as the state recorded an increase in the elephant population from 5,719 in 2017 to 5,828 in 2024, according to the Elephant Population Estimation 2024 report released by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. As per the report, 82% of the total elephant population resides within the five Elephant Reserves, underlining their critical role in conservation. The Chirang-Ripu Elephant Reserve recorded the highest density of 79 elephants per 100 sq. km.
